We are Bob and Lise' (pronounce Lisa) Dews.
We purchased the Laurelwood in June of 1995. After spending many years in the "corporate rat race" we decided to give up the big city life and move to the mountains. The birth of our twin daughters in 1993 helped to prompt this decision! We are now living out our dream of running our own family business. Since purchasing the Inn, we have made many improvements to the existing rooms, built the log building with the suites, and a freestanding log cabin. We also purchased 8 acres of land that adjoined our property. In addition to running the Inn, God led us to homeschool our daughters from the start through high
school. The girls have recently graduated and are now both away at
separate colleges!. You can count on all of us here at the Laurelwood Inn to help make your North Carolina vacation memorable and special. Along with providing you with wonderful accommodations, we are also experts on the area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in and around Cashiers, NC. We can help you find and plan such exciting activities as horseback riding along local mountain trails, golfing, fishing, whitewater rafting, antiquing, shopping and more! We hope to see you soon, Bob, Lise, Mary and Elizabeth
The Deadwylers at Graveyard Fields (on the Blue Ridge Parkway
(Doris holding her dulcimer built by Eric) Eric and Doris Deadwyler are originally from South and North, respectively. They met on the Gulf Coast, where they lived for many years until they had their fill of hurricanes and over-crowding. Like the Dews, the Deadwylers homeschooled their younger daughter, mostly during the elementary years. They are very happy to be here in Cashiers and the Blue Ridge Mountains. They are blessed to work for the Dews, and are thankful for the opportunities that God has given them on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. After moving to the mountains, Doris began to develop an interest in Appalachian (or mountain) dulcimer. Eric built her first dulcimer in 2009 (from a kit) and built her another one (the one in the photo above) in July, 2012 at Dulcimer U at Western Carolina University (a six-day mountain dulcimer workshop taught by the some of the best dulcimer players in the US). You can occasionally find Doris performing a growing repertoire of traditional mountain music in the Laurelwood Lobby and some Tuesday mornings at the Bird Barn in Cashiers, and at various local events and venues. She also plays therapeutic music at local nursing homes and for those in need. She'll be glad to teach you how to play... you'll almost surely be able to play mountain dulcimer after only one lesson! Eric is also moving in musical directions with Doris... he is currently learning piano and is also beginning to write music. Who knows- you might even catch him on dulcimer with Doris! "Praise Him with stringed instruments..." Psalm 150:4b - E & D.
