Cashiers, NC and the surrounding area offer many wonderful and fun things to do for your mountain vacation in North Carolina. During your stay at Laurelwood Inn, you may enjoy everything from hiking to classical music. Take a look at some of the neat things offered in our area below:

Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival
The Highlands Cashiers Music Festival begins in the month of July and offers wonderful classical music concerts through August. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit their website or give them a call at (828) 526-9060.
Groovin’ on the Green (Weather permitting)
On select Friday evenings in summer through early October, the Greater Cashiers Area Merchants Association presents live outdoor concerts at the Village Green. A quick walk across the street from the Laurelwood Inn. Performances last summer have featured renowned classical pianists Leonid Treer and Judith Burganger. A classical guitarist George Andrews and local bluegrass. Bring a picnic, drinks and your lawn chair. Concerts usually begin at 6:30 PM and admission is free! The Brevard Music Center offers wonderful indoor / outdoor concerts and plays during the summer months.
Cashiers is becoming recognized for its world-class golf courses. The following are open to the public:
Sapphire National Golf Club offers scenic views and stone bridge crossings over mountain streams on the 6,185-yard, par-70 course. Call (828) 743-1174 or visit their website for more information.

Red Bird Golf Links (828) 743-1991 is an executive nine-hole course.
Enjoy beautiful Lake Glenville or any of the many streams or lakes in our area. Boat rentals (pontoon boats, bass boats, and kayaks) are available at Signal Ridge Marina (828) 743-2143. This is the only marina directly on Lake Glenville. Around 3500 ft elevation, Lake Glenville is the highest elevation lake east of the Mississippi encompassing 1450 acres of surface water. The lake’s cool mountain waters are perfect for skiing and fishing. Fishing for Small and Largemouth Bass, Walleye, Trout, and Bream is easiest by boat. Signal Ridge Marina is less than ten minutes north of Cashiers.
The WNC Fly Fishing Trail: This “trail” offers 15 stops that include some of the best fly-fishing spots in North Carolina. We have these maps in our office, but you can also visit their website for more information!

Cashiers is known for its many gift shops. Come enjoy the new walking path that loops around town and allows you to walk to most of the shops and restaurants right from the Laurelwood Inn. Our property is the only lodging facility located in the downtown area. Take a look here to see a sampling of some of the amazing shops in our area.
In the winter, enjoy a day of skiing, snowboarding or sledding at Sapphire Valley. This hill is only 3 miles from our property. Be sure to call their Ski Hotline to check snow conditions: (828) 743-1162.
WATERFALLS, HIKING & OTHER FUN THINGS
There are 19 waterfalls in the Cashiers area, including the king of them all, Whitewater Falls. With the upper and lower falls, it is one of the tallest waterfalls on the east of the Mississippi River. Be sure to ask us at check-in for a map to the waterfalls. North Carolina Waterfalls is a helpful website with a lot of information regarding the waterfalls in Jackson County and surrounding areas.The Cashiers area is known for its many beautiful hiking trails. Pack a lunch and enjoy the many trails in our area. When you check in, ask for a hiking map. Gorges State Park is a beautiful and fairly new area that after significant upgrades has just been re-opened to the public. Gorges is the only NC state park west of Asheville. The park is home to nearly 125 rare and endangered plant and animal species, including Oconee Bells, Pink Lady’s Slippers, and the Turquoise Darter. Recent improvements to the park include new trails, overlooks and expanded parking.

HISTORY AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL PLACES
The Zachary-Tolbert House is an 1840 estate house listed on the National Register of Historic Places is just a 5-minute drive from Laurelwood Inn. The home was built by one of Cashiers’ very first residents, Mordecai Zachary. The home has a large collection of “plain style” furniture made by Mordecai. The Highlands Nature Center and Biological Station has a host of exhibits on the mountain eco-system and biodiversity, including live animals, hands-on-stations, plus an archaeological exhibit. Their grounds are a great place for a picnic! The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is a fun place for the whole family. There are also some pretty waterfalls nearby.If you decide to go the Pisgah Center, then continue on to the Cradle of Forestry, another fun family activity.On the campus of Western Carolina University is the Mountain Heritage Center with many wonderful displays of what life might have looked like for our area’s first settlers.
The Oconaluftee Living History Village in Cherokee has reenactments of early Cherokee life.
